Major I have this day had an interview with your Sub Capt Connoly of this county - in regard to a freedboy named "Benjamin" whom I received out of the poor house, in Richmond, from a Federal Officer. April 1865, I took this boy, now about 12 years of age with the understanding that I was to keep him until he arrived of age - at the same time I was offered his sister whom I declined. This boy has been with me since that time I have fed & clothed him and taught him as best I could and hold myself bound to do the part by him due an apprentice. 

I presume his mother wishes simply to get him for the purpose of hiring him out for I am sure she cannot take care of him. If your Bureau cannot bind him to me I would like to hire him at proper rates. I have taken some pains with the boy and feel attached to him and will give his mother
