Captain
At a recent sale of the effects of Henry Carpenter decd. of this county on the 11th day of September 1866 I purchased a calf which calf is described in the enclosed copy warrant said calf was taken from my place and sold by Mrs Lucy D Carpenter "by mistake" I brought a warrant to recover the property and although I proved by responsible witness whose names are signed in the enclosed papers that the calf sold by her was my property the court dismissed the case and compelled me to pay one half the costs on motion by me for a new trial Justice Reid thretened if I persisted in my motion he would put the entire costs upon me, but if I would drop the matter he would divide the costs between the defendant & myself, I would have persisted in taking an appeal to the County Court but for my misfortune in losing all my property by reason of going through the Federal lines the value of the calf would not have justified me in prosecuting said claim in said court I consider the decision an unjust one and think it was decided against me because I was a Reffugee during the war and a Union man. I appeal to you to forward the enclosed papers to Genl O Brown at Richmond Va & that you request him to bring it before a court where I can get justice done me.
