Capt. S W Carpenter
A Sub A. Comr. Bureau R.F. and A.L.
Madison C.H. Va.

Captain

At a sale of the effects of Henry Carpenter decd of this county on the 11th day of September 1866 I purchased a calf which calf is described in the enclosed copy of Warrant. Said calf was taken from my place and sold by Mrs Lucy D. Carpenter "by mistake" I brought a suit to recover the property, and although I proved by responsible witnesses that the calf sold by her was my property the court dismissed the case and compelled me to pay one half the costs. I consider the decision an unjust one and think it was decided against me because I was a Refugee during the war and a union man. You will oblige me by forwarding the enclosed papers to Gen. O. Brown at Richmond Va.
I am your obt. servant
