ing a trick upon the residents of the farm they complained that they had been employed to work at the Government Saw Mill on the farm some for six (6) months others for twelve (12) months and that they had not recived a cent for their services. they complained that they had to take care of a number of orphan colored children and old people left on their hands that the Bureau rendered no aid to these helpless colored infants and old people left on their land that the Bureau rendered no aid to these helpless colored infants and old people except that it had deputised a resident agent by the name of Black to sell not give them clothing I took the statement of several on this subject and all tallied. They also complained that a Surgeon named Sessinger who had been sent to them by the Bureau publicly exhibited a female with a bad disorder. I told them that if they wished me to attend to redressing their aggrievances that they must raise money enough to pay my expenses and I would go to the proper authorities to see what could be done for them. They did so raising thirty three dollars and over. I remained two days investigating their situation so that I could report the facts to Gen. Brown. I drew up a report of these facts and went in person to Gen. Brown and laid this matter before him. Dr. DeLamater was present when I laid this complaint before Gen. Brown and he Gen. Brown told Dr. De,Lamatter about the small pox. Gen. Brown told me that the farm had been turned over to Mr Taylor that he Taylor had been pardoned that he Brown would do all he could for the residents on said farm. I explained to Gen. Brown the situation of these six hundred (600) freed people and told him that if they were compelled to leave the farm at that time, that they would be worse off than any six [[page cut off]]
