man blame me for closing my home, prisoner I may be, the whole city from flames, and protecting my character and the character of the young creature at my side? In about an hour I was in bed, and much injured in health. Just before day Armistead Banks beat violently at my back door, and demanded to enter to get his “things”. I told him to bring a Police man at the proper hour, for he should not enter my house; at 8 o clock he came again. I refused him admission, and at 10 o clock he appeared with a Military guard, who demanded in the name of Cap. Cook, “by what authority, Madam, do you keep this man's goods"? Upon my giving a full statement, and leading the Guard and Banks through this house and rooms, the former gave me every protection and indemnity that respect and sympathy can elicit from a brave man. Ordered Banks to settle his rent on Saturday, and in case of failure I was to send word to the Bureau and my rent would be met and Banks dealt with. on Tuesday I wrote. This was followed by several other notes. I enclose the reply to one. To another I re’ced in reply and Instrument of writing with directions to serve it on Banks. I returned to the Clerk. He sent it back, and told me to hunt Banks and give it to him. I returned it the second time, & sent word, “That in consideration of my sex, I had been suspended, and could not say when I would be allowed to resume my duties to the Army.” it was sent back again, and I was to give it to a Police-man
