General
I have the honor to call your attention to the suffering among the freedmen of this city for want of fuel and to respectfully ask if something cannot be done to aid them by small issues of wood.
Pine wood sells in the streets at $6.00 per cord on small loads. many families are suffering with cold and I believe I am safe in saying that some will perish before Spring unless aided. The issue need not be large as the demand for fuel and rations are not numerous, but urgent; some so much so that we have aided the applicants with private funds. I have contracted for pine wood for the hospital here at $4.00 per cord and can obtain plenty at the same rate.
