Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands,
Office Asst. Sup't. Sub-District Embracing
Nottoway and Lunenburg Counties, Va.
Burkeville, Va, April 11th 1867

Major J. R. Stone
Sup'dt 2nd Dist.

Understanding that Col John Burke, at present residing in Petersburg, is an applicant for the position of Citizen Asst Sup'dt of this Bureau, I take pleasure in recommending his application to the favorable consideration of the Bureau Authorities. He is a gentleman of high character, and excellent business qualifications, and would in my opinion make an efficient and reliable Bureau Agent. He has served with honor and distinction in the U.S. Army during the late war, was complimented highly by Maj Gen'l McClellan, for his efficiency and gallantry as Lt Col of 37th Regt N.Y. Vols, and commanded a Brigade in the 2nd Corps. I would respectfully urge his appointment.

Most Respectfully
D.J. Connolly,
Bvt Capt. U.S. Vols,
Asst Sup'dt.
