Dear Sir
Your letter of enquiry to me concerning a certain Black Horse sold or transfered to Mr Thomas R. Marshall by Mr W.D. Hix in May or June of 1865 was received to day.

The horse in question claimed by Mr Cumby is not a black but a large, one eyed Bay horse. This horse was transfered to Mr Thomas R. Marshall the latter part of April or early in May 1865 not later however I am certain than the 7" of May 1865 by Mr Wm D Hix who was then acting under orders from Genl Gibbons & Genl Grant to distribute the property surrendered by Genl Lee to such worthy citizens as had lost property by the U. S. Army in its
