Dear Sir
I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your two communications, first of which came to my house in my absence, and hence was not recd. until late Saturday Evening when I was brought up from Richmond on the train, quite sick, since which time have been confined to my bed, until today.

I handed that letter to Dr. Tho's P. Mathews, who was my attending Physician, requesting him to reply to it, which he promised me would do.

Mr. Thomas R. Marshall decd. formerly of Charlotte County but late of Knoxville Tenn. left his son James B Marshall Esq of Petersburg in this [[?]]. I am in no way connected with the family, in fact I was not intimately acquainted with them, never having met them more than twice. In reply to your last communication I have to say, that though it has been some time since
