Yours is just to hand & I hasten to reply. in regard to the letter of Brevet Lieut Col Jordan at Farmville. Mr Marshall has never owned a black horse since the war at all. I guess the horse in question is the bay horse sold Mr D Dickerson at the sale. This bay horse was turned over with 3 mules all thoroughly broken down & poor as poverty to Mr Marshall the latter part of April or 1st of May 1865: April though I think; in place of the 6 horses & mules taken a week after the surrender from him Mr M. You will remember that Mr W D Hix received orders from Genl Gibbons & Grant {written} to collect all the C.S. property surrendered by Genl Lee & distribute the same to worthy
