BUREAU OF REFUGEES, FREEDMEN AND ABANDONED LANDS,
OFFICE ASST. SUP'T. SUB-DISTRICT EMBRACING
NOTTOWAY AND LUNENBURG COUNTIES, VA.
Burkeville, Va., May 31st 1867

Capt Garrick Mallery
A. Asst Adjutant Gen'l.

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of the 27th Inst. Desiring to be informed of the names of the Justices alluded to in a recent report of mine, that would soon resign.

And in reply would state, that a party named Neal, a Justice of Lunenburg County, has threatened to resign several times during the past three months but yet retains his position.

A gentleman named Allan also a Justice of that County has informed me that he would be compelled to resign, owing to the manner in which he was treated by the other Justices and Civil Officials of that County, in his efforts to perform his duty faithfully and impartially this gentleman advocates a complete "reconstruction" of the entire County Court and Civil Officials of that County.

Most Respectfully
