I kept the money as a favor to him and at his urgent request and not because I wanted it or needed it and so far from his having any claim against me now when all the money at the South is worthless I consider that I should be poorly paid for [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] his support and expences and for the privileges and immunities I allowed him by the whole amount if it was all now in my hands in current money
Jno Crittendon was hired from me by Roderick Payne up to the year 1862 and ran a boat on James River as I believed for his own benefit - after that until the year 1868 he ran a boat in my name on Appomattox River I was responsible for all his losses and damages of freight &c & I permitted him to receive all his earnings beyond a reasonable hire for his services - after the year 1868 he ceased to run a boat and has done nothing since From that time for 18 years he has lived on my plantation without rendering the slightest service to me of any description - he has been supported all the time by me except his clothing - he has occupied the best house on the place, been supplied with
