fuel hauled to his door, with a garden and as much other land as he chose to work, with the privilege of raising 2 or 3 hogs every year and as much poultry as he wanted and keeping and raising bees &c while I paid his taxes and did all the most indulgent master could do - In fact he was the only free man on the place myself not excepted and the money he had was made in my time and with facilities furnished by me and he had no use for it simply because I supplied his wants-
As to the charge of taking the bond from him under a false pretence and refusing to give it up I have to say that the charge is false- 
In the first place he had no bond, but simply a Memo of the amount given to him while he was my slave In March 1865 finding that the Army was about to fall back and being unwilling that such a paper should be found in his hands by the Federal soldiers (not that I thought it constituted any legal claim against me but because I thought they might use it to my injury) I went to him and asked him for it- and he gave it to me without the least hesitation or reluctance and with no expectation that I was to return it to him
