and brutally knocked down &  beaten. 
I was not present & knew nothing of the affray until called upon to suppress the riot. The Freedmen were greatly excited and were hardly restrained from a general riot, after seeing Mr Tucker so brutally beaten. They listened to me, however, when I appeared among them & dispersed for their homes. I am now taking affidavits in the matter & after completion shall make a full report of the affair to the Commanding General. I requested a Magistrate to issue a warrent for the arrest of the offending parties & take them before the civil authorities, but as yet no arrests have been made.
