Captain,
I have the honor to report the murder of a freedman under the following circumstances.

On the evening of Saturday June 8th, James Bird struck Silas Blackwell on the head with a hoe which fractured his skull. Blackwell died from the effects of the wound soon after.

Both of the parties were freedmen and were working at the time the quarrel took place, on the farm of a Mr Howard on Accotink Creek.

Bird immediately fled. Every effort has been made to arrest him but thus far without success

I am, Captain,
Very Respectfully
