Bureau R. F. and A. L. Office A. S. A Comr Fairfax Co. Va. Falls Church June 30th 1867 Capt S. P. Lee Sub. Asst. Comr 10th Dist. Va. Captain, I have the honor to report the murder of a freedman under the following circumstances. On the evening of Saturday June 8th, James Bird struck Silas Blackwell on the head with a hoe which fractured his skull. Blackwell died from the effects of the wound soon after. Both of the parties were freedmen and were working at the time the quarrel took place, on the farm of a Mr Howard on Accotink Creek. Bird immediately fled.
