I cite the following recent outrages exemplifying the probable correctness of my assertion.

Nat Cobb. colored. working for W.H. Basden in Sussex County. had some words with his employer. who in addition to other offensive language. called Cobb a liar. The latter, with the usual meekness of the negro in resenting insults by the whites. walked off. Basden took his gun and fired at him twice, after the first shot Nat ran, but not fast enough to escape being hit by the second fire. - his injuries were slight. Basden told Nat's father that he "intended to have put both loads into his dammed heart".- Basden was tried for felony. before the proper court. and by a jury of Sussex County. and acquitted.

James Wilson, working for Jim Deal at Cabin Point in Surry County. told his employer that he did not have enough to eat. Deal call him a liar. Wilson then started for home. but before he could get far was shot at
