Makes report in case of Commonwealth Vs. W. L. Basden, tried at Sussex Co Court upon charge of feloniously and maliciously shooting Nat. Cobb (cold). Gives synopsis of evidence, which sustains the charge, yet the Jury acquitted the Def't. States it is impossible to impannel a jury of white men who will convict or even censure a white man for shooting a negro, providing the white man belongs to what they call the respectable class of whites. Considers the jury in this case as much to blame as Deft, and requests that they be tried before a Military Commission for violation of their oaths. Encloses list of names of Jurors, with copies of presentment of Grand Jury, and committment.
