I resided for several years during the war and since on the Clopton lot situated in full view of the farm Roseland of Mr Joseph Segar, in the county of Elizabeth City, in the state of Virginia, which said farm was to my knowledge occupied the greater portion of the war by freedmen and freedwomen, and by a considerable number until the fall of the year before last year, I mean the year, 1866. Mr. Segar's woods being the nearest and most convenient to the freedmen and freedwoman located on the farm, many of the latter being families of colored soldiers, the freed people on the farm obtained their supplies of fuel from the woods of Mr. Segar, and this continued so long as any wood remained. My residence was in full view of the Freedmen's dwellings. Given
