With reference to the Bureau Funds received and expended for the Freedmens School House at Meherin, Lunenburg Co. Va. I have the honor to report that the entire amount furnished by the Bureau, was $150.00 and not $170 as stated in the enclosed communication from Bvt. Major Stone.

I engaged two Carpenters to build it, for which they were to receive $52 The building was to be finished in three weeks and was not to cost exceeding $100. with neither of these conditions, did they comply.  The building exceeding in cost the amount agreed upon. And upon paying all the bills for materials furnished, paid for the Land, bought rations for Carpenters. I found that I had not sufficient funds to pay them also for their work.  I informed them of this, when they told me to never mind their pay, then, but to use any balance I had on hand in purchasing additional Articles needed for the School House, that they thought. they could get their money by Subscription among the Freedmen  I was asked for a paper stating that they
