reenlisted for three years as a private in the Eighth regiment of Connecticut Volunteers. He was promoted to be first Lieutenant of Co. 6 after the battle of Roanoke Island and to be Captain on the 14th of August 1862. He commanded his company at the battles of South Mountain and Antietam. In the latter engagement he lost his left arm. He was the first officer of twelve seriously wounded in that engagement to return to duty. He commanded his company at Fredericksburg, the siege of Suffolk and in the operations of 1863. He was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps Dec 30th, 1863 in the 19th Regiment of which he has since served with fidelity and efficiency.
