demand for additional ones. Some of the schools are in a flourishing, satisfactory condition, while others do not seem to advance as could be wished, or even to maintain their former prosperity. The schools of this city numbered about 150 less pupils in November of this year than at the same period last year. I cannot fully account for this, unless it be entirely attributable to the plan of the Freedmens Union Commission of collecting from some of the school a periodical tax on the pupils, to aid in sustaining the school. It may be however that after the holidays the increase will bring them up to the numerical standard of last year. The demand for the schools is unlimited; but as the funds of the Societies furnishing teachers, will not admit of an increase of this useful corps, 'tis useless to invest money to erect additional houses.

As to the usefulness of the Officers of the Bureau in this Sub-District, I have heretofore fully reported; except in the case of those newly assigned, viz: Lieut Rutherford and Bvt. Capt. Johnson. Both of these officers will in my opinion act with zeal and intelligence in the discharge of their duties, which will be more onerous as the number of officers on duty in the Bureau decrease by muster out.
