Major,
I have the honor to herewith return the papers in the care of Henry Duncan (freedman) vs. A. Boyd & Son. The delay has been cause by the time and labor required to obtain the enclosed copy of A. B. & Son's deed, and by my uncertainty of the length & nature of the investigation to be gone into, and even at this late date, I can see no better way than to throw the case upon its merits.

Henry Duncan worked 15 years whilst a slave; hard over work enabled him to loan to A. Boyd & Son $500. in gold, after he becomes free he renews the note. A. Boyd & Son make a deed of trust providing for rich men (and relatives of their own) to the full amt. of; if not more than the amt. of; all their assets. Henry Duncan is mentioned in the 3rd Class of Creditors, thereby being as virtually placed beyond the chance of payment as though his name had never been mentioned. The laws of his State do not provide for his relief. His good character, his habits of industry & sobriety
