Stepney Poulson has, however, in my opinion, suffered great injustice. He is about seventy (70) years of age, and for over twenty years has occupied the land in question. I am satisfied, that it was the intention of his owner, Robert Poulson, to allow him to remain there for life. Mr. Carmine, an intelligent white mechanic, of Onancock, states; "One morning, about 25 years ago, I heard Robert Poulson say of Stepney Poulson, 'I want to move him from where he is, and if he will put up his house where I shall stake out, he shall stay there 'for life.'" This was done. Early last Spring Stepney's house was burned." Now the widow of Robert Poulson seemed to have disregarded his intention.
