You will please call at the office of the Commissioner Bureau R. F. & A. Lands. for a copy of the list of Confiscated Lands within your District.
You will investigate and report upon the condition of these Lands at your earliest convenience - I would recommend that you secure if possible in each County one or more Farms as homes for old and helpless people, requiring of them to perform such work on these farms as they can towards paying for this support.- You can obtain at the Head Qrs of the Bureau, in Washington, printed copies of the orders issued by Maj Genl Howard

You will ascertain at what time it is desirable for the present school term to close in Hampton and vicinity (which will be I presume about the first of July); and order all of the Schools to be closed at that time including the Government School — Ascertain the whereabouts of Rev Mr Knowlton, Teacher, and request him to report to me in person without delay.

Sir
Your favor of 22nd Inst is received — In reply I have to inform you that Ruckman hires the privilege of planting oysters; See that he pays for it. Is there any new cause of dissatisfaction on the Farms. The people must work. Nothing can be done in the case of Mr Copps—. Assist Mr Alvord but you must not be to any expense.
