Your letter of July 3rd is recd at this office. In reply the Col. directs Me to Say he has written to Capt Flagg to make inquiries about the Box - He has also urged the Speedy appointment of an Asst. Supt of the Bureau for the Eastern Shore - Dr Sydney is not an appointee of this Bureau - and no office would be retained in the Service of the Bureau who is So far destitute of politeness as to treat a Lady discourteously.

I have been absent, hence the delay in replying to your telegram - the amount of Property in the District of the Nottoway is great, it will require an Asst Quarter Master as Superintendent - I have submitted the order to the Commissioner of the Bureau, I am satisfied if it meets his wishes.

A communication has been received from Maj Genl O. O. Howard of which the following is an extract, "Mrs James F Duncan widow of Past midshipman I F Duncan late of U.S. Navy asks for her property at Norfolk Va. She claims to be & to have been, loyal to the United States, and this is endorsed by Simon Stone Collector of Revenue 4th Dist Va.." Please to investigate this case as Soon as possible and report directly to these Head Quarters.
