(401) Richmond August 18th 1865

Ansel Capt: Supt; Goochland Co

Captain

It appears that many of the Freedmen on the Plantation of Patterson Allen have crops put in by themselves, still growing. The Asst Comr was not aware of this, when he gave permission to have these people sent away- He now suggests that someone of them (perhaps Frank Johnson) be allowed to remain and harvest his own crops and those of the other Freedmen under your direction. He promises not to molest Mr. Allen, and, to account fairly for the property of the rest-

Respectfully &c

The Asst Commr desires to know what means you have to pay the salary of Ex. Capt H.E. Alvord. None can be more desirous than he is, to secure to the Bureau, the services of so valuable an officer as Mr. A, but in the absence of Funds, he does not deem it - possible

Very respectfully &c
