Archer Wilson (cold) employed by Wm John Branford Cumberland County Va. has been to these Head Quarters and States, that he was arrested by Dr Patterson "Son in law to Wm Beauford" and carried before the Asst Supt of Cumberland co. for trial. He states that his arrest was made because he would not deliver to Dr Patterson a gun which he had in his possession. He further States that the Asst. Supt. would not allow him any witnesses, but swore at him, and told him he did not believe any thing he (Wilson. said. On the testimony of Dr Patterson. which was that Wilson attempted to shoot him. he was sentenced to twenty days in jail. to be fed on bread and water. and to be tied up by the thumbs two hours each day. for a period of ten days, the remaining he was to carry a barrel on his head one hour each day, and when not carrying the barrel, he was to cut wood for a Wm Foster at the Court House. He was further sentenced to have half of the hair on his head shaved off. The Asst Comm'r directs that you investigate and Report whether this office has so far forgot his duty to the freedmen, as to inflict such diabolical punishment on the accused, without giving him an opportunity to defend himself, and in violation of Circular letter from these Head Qrs. dated Sept 27th/65. Upon investigation, you find this Statement true, you will replace this officer by one who can interpret the orders issued from these Head Qurs.
