Chandler Hon'l. L. H.
U.S. Dist. Attorney. Norfolk Va

Dear Sir,
In reference to the property of Dr Woods I have to inform you that his application has been received this day from Capt C. B. Wilder with following endorsements.

Office Supt 9th Dist.
Fort Monroe Va January 3rd 1866.

Respectfully returned to Col O Brown. Asst. Commissioner
Richmond Va, with the remarks that Dr. Woods' papers were referred to me in Nov. and as I was informed he would be here soon. I waited to see him, with a view to make some fair arrangement if possible, for the colored people on his place, there being over thirty families living on it, very many of them, unable at present, to provide for themselves homes elsewhere. There are also a large number (I think over 40) Hospital buildings, one large church, the Butler School House, where 5 to 100 children attend, and a very large cemetery on it. So I do not see how the place can be given up for this year. I have been informed that through the influence of Gen Howard and others, the Sec. of War has agreed or assured the Rev Chaplain Marshall, that about 10 acres will be reserved

Transcription Notes:
I wasn't sure how to transcribe the signature sections on these as they are written side by side, so for clarity I put the signature sections on separate lines. Also noted a number of questionable characters throughout. ---------- Reopened for Editing 2023-11-14 21:45:32
