Carse Bvt. Maj. G.B.
Asst. Supt. &c.
Major,
I am directed by Colonel O. Brown, to acknowledge the receipt of your favor of the 1st inst. relative to the conduction of affairs in your district.
The Colonel desires me to express to you his complete satisfaction with the manner in which you have always conducted the affairs of your district and to assure you of his full confidence in your ability to cope with any emergencies that may arise.
The colonel has no doubt of the fact that you are socially excluded from all association with those, whose pleasure it seems to him, should rather be to make your ways - "ways of pleasantries and all your paths peace'', but he feels that a strict attention to duty on your part, will as indeed it must have the effect of showing these people, that their true duty, is to pursue an exactly opposite course, from that which they seem now to consider incumbent upon their dignity to as same.
Assuring you of the determination of Colonel Brown to assist and support you in every proper ways, in such difficulties as may in future arise, and giving you his promises that if the citizens duck you, he will see "that there is such a baptism of the guilty parties, as will bring them to believe that an Officer of the Bureau, in the discharge of his duties can not be assaulted or interfered with with impunity."
