Your attention is herewith called to the fact, that a Freedman named Davis Martin (last name the name of his former owner.) now working for the family of Col. Bell near Prince Edward C.H. as gardener and driver makes report to this office that on or about the 17th of March he was brutally beaten by the Provost Marshal at Farmville and one of this orderlies, for being suspected of some complicity with, or knowledge of a "horse thief" by name Dainels.
You will will please investigate this affair and make full report to this office.

Your communication of 29th March, was duly received with Enclosures.
The name of John Barnes does not appear on your list of bounties retained - This man has evidently retained bounty due him which was not accounted for by the mustering officer - If the address of Captain Walter H. Wild, signer of the certificate, and that of Major R. [[M.?]] Morris, 6th U.S. Cav. Mustering Officer could be obtained, we might find out something about Barne's claim. - The bounty retained at Newport News, was turned over to the General Superintendent Negro Affairs, by Major Morris. at the end of each month.-
