The attention of the Asst. Comr. having been called by an article in one of the Petersburgh papers to the proposed removal of Brevet Major John W. Jordan V.R.C. from his present post of duty he directs me to instruct you not to relieve the above named officer from this present station, without orders from this office.

Since the inspection tour of Lt. Col. G. Mallery at Warrenton in reference to the disturbances against Miss Wood and the Freedmans School, a report has reached these Hd. Qrs. implicating the following named parties viz:
Alexander Hunter, son of Judge Hunter, Shepard Pattie, son of P. M. and Warrenton, Albert Harris Warrenton, Calvin Smith Warrenton Mr. Manking a merchant Warrenton, Mr. Welsh of Alexandria (a gambler).
Witnesses Mrs. and Misses Cox where the teacher lives. 
"They saw the men mobbing the teacher on the night of 21st of Feby.
On the night of the 16th of March the following persons are reported guilty Eddie Woodman Ed Manning and Alex Beekam and four others were present and a part of them guilty. Beekam was present but did nothing, he might be a good witness. Witness: Mrs. Caroline Lee.

Mallery, you were not then able to fix with probable ground of suspicion upon any parties guilty of the outrage referred to, so that either yourself or Mrs. Wood were willing to make a specific charge. The above is furnished for your information with directions that you give the same information to the mayor and without delay make report to these Hd. Qrs. what action has been taken or should in your opinion by adopted.
