Captain, A Telegram was sent you to day to suspend the sale of timber cut on land near North Landing in which Mr McNair is interested as Executor.- There seems some doubt whether in the case stated the laws of Virginia recognize the lien of the laborers to the cut timber adverse to the sale under the Deed of Trust on which the land was sold. Mr McNair promises to cooperate with you in case a sale is made, which by getting longer notice will be more likely to bring a better price for the timber, and that the nego [[negro]] laborers shall take the amount of their claim out of the proceeds. If it can be so arranged, it will be the better manner. By Order of Bvt. Brig. General O. Brown Asst. Commissioner (Sgd.) James A. Bates Bvt. Maj. & A.A.A. Genl. Official. Garrick Mallery A.A.A.
