You will immediately proceed to cover the building removed to Slabtown without waiting for the approval of your estimates: it being understood that this work should be performed immediately for the protection of the property.

I have the honor to return enclosed the "application" and "discharge" of Nicholas Hardin, late Private Co. "A." 1st U.S.C.I. received this morning from Washington - This man was not mustered on the rolls as free, consequently evidence will be required, establishing the fact of freedom on or before April 19th, 1861.
This evidence should be in the form of a copy of the court record, or if that is not obtainable, the affidavits of two white persons, whose credibility is certified by the officer administrating the oath.

Major, I am directed by the Asst. Commissioner to acknowledge receipt of your communication of the 18th inst. relative to your status under the order [[strikethrough]] the order [[/strikethrough]] transfering you to Major General Stannard's Dept. Bureau R.F. & A.L. and to say in reply. -
1st You and the officers under you (through you) should report by letter to Genl. Stannard if you have not already done so.
2nd You need issue no instructions to the officers in the five (5) Counties not transferred to Genl. Stannard; they will be instructed from these Head Quarters.
3rd You will make invoices and receipts of all Quarter master stores, Bureau property and funds, clothing, camp and Garrison Equipage for which you are responsible in the Counties of Augusta, Highland, Bath, Alleghany and Rockbridge and transmit the same to Bvt. Maj. G.Q. White chf. Q.M. & Financial Agent at these Head Quarters who will receipt to you for the same.
