The following is an extract from Lt. M.S. Reeds report on Bureau affairs for the month of June 1866. viz:
"Much alarm is created among the Freedmen of this County, in consequence of the expressed determination of white land owners to discontinue the renting of land to Freedmen, after the expiration of the current year."
The Asst. Commissioner directs that you use every possible means to make the freedmen understand, that, they can have no claim on the Lands they now occupy, another year, unless they obtain a lease from the owners — let them understand this as early as possible, so that they can make their arrangements for another year.
Advise all to seek homes in other localities. —
