Dear Bob:
 
I have returned from my brief trek to Los Angeles where I had a most successful visit with Collins-Baker at the Huntington Library. - In my absence Francesca "did her stuff" about the Ingres drawings. Nicol liked it very much - & so did Moira (& when Francesca showed it first.) - Nicol asked Francesca if Moira liked it (apparently he was not in the room when she showed it to her) & when she said yes, Nicol remarked that he might buy it for her. He then asked Francesca what the proper procedure was & Francesca said for him to drop in and see you and the drawing in NY. - Nicol said he didn't like it as much as the one we have(!) & Francesca said that she didn't either but told him that it was considered an exceedingly fine and exceptional portrait drawing. - Then she anticipated what may have been in Nicols mind because she said, "Have a look at the drawing, Nicol, but for heavens sake don't feel that you would be doing us any favor in buying it. - for it means nothing to us except that Tom would love to see such a fine
