OFFICE OF THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

July 13, 1938.

Dear Bob:

I was glad to have your letter of July 11th and am happy to know that you and Helen are comfortably settled for a pleasant summer in the country.

Walter has been giving considerable thought to the possibility of keeping at least one picture from the Venetian show. As you probably know, he is especially fond of the Catena but I am afraid it is beyond our purse. The other picture about which he is particuarly enthusiastic is the small Tiepolo, "Martyrdom of St. Sebastian", but here again the price is the main obstacle. Have you any idea as to what kind of a price your firm could make on this picture? It is marked $14,000. I also wish that someone would take a fancy to the Tiepolo "Madonna & Child".

I read about the prices brought by the Schiff things so I guess John Schiff did not make any mistake in disposing of them in London.

Francesca and I are off to Tahoe this weekend for a few days. The show is doing very well and our catalogues are disappearing in very satisfactory fashion.

With fondest greetings to both you and Helen, I am

As ever,
Tom
