Dear Tommy:

Many thanks for your good letter which was forwarded to me out here. As you can see, we are here for the summer, having taken Helen's sister's house on the place for two months. It is really glorious, and I only wish you and Francesca could spend some time with us.

Thank you also for all your trouble about the gift, but I think you will want to know that it never arrived. However, please don't trouble about it any more, as it is really the thought that we appreciate, as both Helen and I love you very much and we loved having you stay with us. The best thanks you can give us is to come again with Francesca and use the guest room all over again.

The office is forwarding the catalogue to me and I am very anxious to see it. Saw Constable before sailing and and he said he had a fine time and was most enthusiastic. Incidentally, what has been the reaction to the pictures we sent out? Do you think there is any chance of the museum acquiring either the Catena, the Tiepolo "Martyrdom of St. Sebastien", or the G.D. Tiepolo "Head of an Oriental"? Naturally, I would do everything in my power to facilitate a sale, and look forward to hearing from you or Dr. Heil about this.

Otherwise, no special news for the moment. Did you see the prices of the Schiff sale in London some weeks ago? Over [[pound symbol]]100,000.!!!

Best wishes to you both,

As always, yours,

Mr. Thomas C. Howe,
Calif. Palace of the Legion of Honor,
San Francisco, California.
