OFFICE OF THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

our show by the middle of June, so it is probable that I shall be leaving here within a week or ten days at the latest. I am sorry to say that I shall be unattended on this jaunt because Mr. and Mrs. Deering are going east early in May and it would not be a good idea for both families to be away from S.F. simultaneously - what with our charming daughter around to be considered. Francesca would love to come with me but feels that a winter visit to your town would be more exciting - particularly as this time I will have to be attending pretty strictly to the business of the museum.

Walter and I have gone over the material that might possibly be available in museums and private collections, but he has not as yet written any of the dealers. I am hoping that they will be inclined favorably towards the show, which, as in the past, will be held during the dead season in New York. As a matter of fact, I suppose that the past few months have been rather gloomy anyway. If the stock market is any indication of the easy flow of money I hate to think of what 57th Street looks like just now.

By the way I wrote Eddie today to tell him about a very nice young fellow who has just been out here. His name is Hans Knoll. He is a nephew of Karl Vollmüller, who wrote "The Miracle" among other things. Perhaps you have already run into him. I think that you would find him a very agreeable guy. I almost drove east with him two weeks ago, but at that time our plans for a show were not sufficiently definite to warrant my whipping off on such short notice. Doubtless the trip by train will be less wearing.

Walter was delighted to receive the catalogue of your Raeburn Show. I am only sorry that I could not be in New York to see it. What else is new? I am hoping that if and when I do turn up, you and Helen will be in town. Agnes wrote that she had spent a charming day or so in your company not so long ago. I'll keep you posted as to my wanderings.

In the meantime, our fondest greetings to you both.

As ever,
Tom.
