Dear Tommie:

I am giving these lines of introduction to one of my very best and closest friend, John S. Thacher who is going to spend a few days for the first time in your fair city.

Having sung your praises, and told him all about the virtues and vices of you and Francesca, I feel it is only fair to tell you something about him. 

As you no doubt know, John is today associated with the Fogg Museum in the capacity of Assistant to the Directors, a most imposing and official position. He is, to use the vernacular, a scholar and a gentleman, and I recommend him to your good graces for his brilliance in both capacities. You will find him charming, amusing, extremely intelligent and I know that both you and Francesca will enjoy being with him.

I should appreciate it no end if you could possibly manage to give John "The Works". There are one or two "musts" that I have told him about, notably Templeton Crocker's apartment and collection which, if it could be arranged, would indeed be wonderful. At the same time, may I point out that Hans Waegen, my associate and colleague, is giving John a letter to Raymond Armsby, so that
