Dear Bob:

You are a great satisfaction to the Howes in one way - namely that you let us know when you are in our part of the world; and in another you are far from satisfactory, meaning that we both feel very grim about your being "so near and yet so far away." For a person who is by nature rather voluble I seem to accomplish nothing over the telephone! So I am writing you in the earnest hope that you will manage to include San Francisco on your wide loop through the west. We both want so very much to see you. Don't you think you could spare at least a day or two? Would you be tempted by a mixture of business and pleasure? Business first: the young de Guignes are here now and we could get hold of them if you would come up. They are sailing for Europe in April and it occurs to me that you might work out some connection with them if you were to meet them here - either when they pass through New York, or later abroad if you are going over this summer. As to pleasure: our Chinese friend, Dr. Chung, is giving a jamboree next Monday night to which we would love to take you. She is the gal who had the Holkars in tow while they were here in 1936. Walter is returning Friday morning according to a wire which just came.

I should love to whip down to Los Angeles with Francesca, but we hear that there is another storm brewing, so the young parents should not desert their child! Seriously, I ought not to be away while Walter is absent - and besides our lady patroness Mrs. Spreckels is giving us a lot of her time just now, so it would be very indiscreet of me to be out of town at this particular moment. Now there is another reason for your coming to San Francisco! You might even accomplish the impossible and win her over to your establishment! I'll put myself at your disposal if that should be worthy of serious consideration.

God knows when we are going to get to New York again, so we are trying to lure you up this way. By the way, Mr. Milliken of Cleveland was here a couple of weeks ago - over Washington's Birthday. He may still be in Pasadena. He and Harry Francis had both been there in connection with the estate of a Mrs. Everett who had left a number of things to the museum. Harry did not get to San Francisco
