Dear Dr. Heil:

It is really too bad about the Renoir, but I want you to know that both René and I appreciate immensely, what you have done. 

Your telegram was certainly very eloquent and you just had bad luck.  That has been, unfortunately, my case too, as after having tried for two days to get hold of Mrs. A. B. Spreckles I have heard this minute that she has gone back to San Fransisco. I didn't even have a chance to talk to her, and her stay in New York must have been only about two days. 

You may thus be able to take it up with her, as if I remember well, you took a good photograph along with you. 

By the way, I am just told that the painting reached us safely and please accept my thanks for your promptness.
