Mr. Rene Seligmann,
Jacques Seligmann & Co., Inc.,
3 East 51st Street,
New York, N.Y.

Dear Rene:

Will you kindly forgive the delay in replying to your telegram and letter? A combination of circumstances has prevented my making the headway I had hoped for in connection with the Renoir portrait. Of two encouraging prospects, one died suddenly two weeks ago. The other is at present convalescing in the from a serious illness. In addition, the opening of two remodeled wings of the museum together with the exhibition of Islamic Art entailed so much work that I have not been free to approach other people who might possibly be interested. However, now that the museum is in running order and the man who has been recuperating in the southern part of the state is expected to return to San Francisco shortly, I hope that I shall be able to make some headway.

Ever since its arrival, the Renoir has been prominently displayed and a number of really discriminating people have been most enthusiastic about it.

Eager as I am to source this picture for San Francisco, I cannot predict the outcome of my endeavors. Therefore, if you feel that the prospect in New York is brighter, we shall of course return the painting upon word from you.

With kindest regards, I am

Very sincerely yours,
Walter Heil
