Dear Tom:
Many thanks for your good lines which reached me a day after my arrival in New York. To say the least, the contents of your letter fascinated, amused and interested Helen and me and to say the least, we are more grateful to you and Francesca for the trouble you went to over our Indian friends. Frankly, I feel very apologetic to you both as the account of the luncheon sounds most embarassing and perhaps, most of all to me. I regret to say I had several such experiences in Los Angeles, which were actually only minor incidents, which in the general run of things, take on a major importance after a while. I know you feel very much the same way I do and the un-fortunate part of it is, as you so aptly caught on, that these matters have absolutely no significance or meaning to his Highness.

Anyway, it would seem that you enjoyed the company at large and I am delighted that you liked Mrs. Bingley, who is a very charming and brilliant woman. Namli is an ass and I won't bother much about him, if I could help it. I think it was terribly nice of you to include them in your opera party for November 2nd, but I would certainly write to them saying that at the present writing you did not think you would be able to get any tickets for Mrs. Bingley and Captain Namli and that in the event that you were unsuccessful in obtaining tickets for them, you hope they will understand. In conclusion, rest assured that no matter what happens it will be O.K. I am delighted that you went to see Dr. Chung. She must be a very amusing person from all I have heard.

Thank you again for writing to the de Guignes in Paris. As a matter of fact, I am just in receipt of a letter from Germain Seligmann, in which he included a copy of a letter I wrote to them c/o Morgan & Company, so I hope that they will meet over there. In any case, I look forward to seeing them on their return in the fall.

The details of my Los Angeles sojourn are far too numerous for the confines of this letter. The more social angles I am sure you heard about from the Holkars, but in any case, I am hoping that when I am through this initial rush of things in New York, that I will have more time to write you both.
