War Department,
Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands,
Washington, January 21st, 1867.
Major Gen. J.M. Schofield,
assistant commissioner, &c.
Richmond, Va.
General:
In answer to your letter of the 29th ultimo respecting the Taylor farm, I am directed by Major Gen. Howard, Commissioner, &c. to state that he does not desire to retain possession of the farm, leaving the amount of rent to be determined in future, after Mr. Taylor's refusal to lease it.
He wishes every effort made to provide for the freedmen elsewhere.
If the able bodied fail to remove after opportunity is offered them, Mr. Taylor must look to them, and not to the Bureau,
