amicable relations between the races. Further, this want of interest is largely due to having almost a new corps of teachers this year. It requires from three to six months for a new teacher to attain the vantage ground which one well acquainted would occupy. The. Am. Miss. Assn. had their own reasons for this change. I have strongly and repeatedly urged upon them, the importance of retaining the same corps from year to year, to which they can testify. The schools here, though opened Oct 15/66, did not get fully under way till the 1st Nov. Even after that time, there were, through sickness, and for other reasons, a number of most unfortunate changes in the teachers. I regret to say, that I cannot speak highly of the Supt. of the schools of Hampton and vicinity. If I remember rightly, Mr. Alvord only visited the "Butler" and "Ward" schools, not the "Lincoln" school (of Hampton,) or the "Armstrong" school of Slabtown:- in the schools visited, there were only new teachers, who at the time of his visit, were somewhat discouraged: the latest are conducted mainly by veterans.
