Sir.
I have received your letter of Dec. 14th inquiring as to $300. left for deposit by Lewis Johnson. 1st U.S. Col. Cavy. Your letter gives no particulars of time nor place, else I might perhaps be able to reply at once. If this is claimed to be deposited at any date later than Nov. 1st 1864, then I know nothing of the transaction:- likewise, if it occurred any where else than at Newport News. Va.

For 3 months previous to the above date, I superintended enlisting and mustering of colored recruits at New port News, to be credited to the different Northern States. At that time the 'Norfolk Savings Bank' was gotten up by Genl. B.F. Butler, Commg. Department.

The President thereof was Maj. George J. Carney. A.D.C. to Genl. Butler. The 1st Vice President was Capt. O. Brown A.Q.M. and Superintendent of Contrabands, afterwards Bvt. Brig. Gen. O. Brown. Freedmens Bureau at Richmond Va. Their prospectus, a
