Referring to your letter of 10th inst. relative to return transportation for teachers, I am directed by Maj. Genl. O.O. Howard, Commissioner, to say that, one thousand dollars were directed for this purpose to the American Missionary Association, and a like sum to the American Freedmens Union Commission, supposing that these two organizations comprehended the entire field. By this arrangement the Friends' are provided for.
The Episcopal Association has sent but few teachers into the field and can make specific application so with others, if there are any outside; but if there are many, it will necessitate the cutting off of return transportation altogether.
General Howard understood that all societies of any considerable importance had been consolidated
