Dear Sir,
There is a woman named Lucy Mines on my plantation who left it on the 1st June 1864 and returned 17 or 18 months ago. She is too old to work & is supported by me. Her daughter a young woman named Henrietta is very ill at Freedmen's Village Arlington - in bed- helpless, & not expected to recover. Her husband has deserted her, & her only child about three months old died from want of sustenance ten days ago. The poor woman is constantly calling for her mother. Can you not furnish transportation for the mother to Alexandria & for them both, if the daughter gets well, to Wickham's on the Va. Central Road. It is a case of charity & I trust you will be able to grant this request. I cannot without inconvenience to myself furnish the money & considering the great number of freedpeople I have supported without calling on the government
