Roseland, July 20 '67
My Dear Sir,
   I enclose you an affidavit of Charles W. Hickman Esq. whom, I presume, you will  know, whichsthos that the entire woodland timber on my wood land was consumed by the freedmen.  Any number affidavits to the same effect can be had, if desired  or required.
   I will state, myself, that every cord of wood consumed in my family for five years past, and all the lumber I have had occasion for, have been bought and paid for out of my own means, though I had an abundance off both at the breaking out of the Rebellion.  There is but one fire on the former woodland.
   I state, further, that the taking of the wood was well known to the Freedman's Bureau and that to its officers and by public interfering I  protected against the spoliation.
   The village called "Stab town", with several thousand of population, and that of "Segar
