Fort Monroe Aug. 25. 67

Robert Dixon (cold) resident of Elizabeth City Co. Va. being duly sworn deposes and says, that he has resided near that portion of Mr. Joseph Segar's land called "Oakland", in Elizabeth City County, since 1861. That he (Deponent) formerly (year unknown, thinks 1863,) cut down standing timber there, for one Alex Washington cold. (thinks about five cords;) Deponent saw said timber land almost daily; states that the small timber on said land was cut for use of U.S. troops stationed around Fort Monroe; Saw Gov't. trams hauling said small timer frequently.

Deponent, saw freed people continually cutting the large timber on said land; saw large loads of heavy timber moved away by freed-people; saw large quantities of timber being corded and penned on said land by freedpeople. Deponent believes that the small timber was cut by the U.S. troops, while the heavy timber was cut by the freedpeople.
